Hello,

Has any one used the Pocket Wizards Mini/Flex Set Up with Speedlight 550EX Flash?

One of the warnings listed on B+H webpage, and I read about in many reviews is the system not working well with some units. Mainly the 580EX II. Was hoping since all my flashes are the older 550's that I would not run into this problem.

Thanks in Advance for all reply's.

I bought the 550's for the same reasons, they are working great for me, the only issue is the test button does not fire the flashes, but fire with the camera every time.

I use them with th 580EX. The issue is that the noise produced by the flash itself can interfere with the radio signal. As long as the flashes are within 30 feet or so of the camera it hasn't been any issue, the flashes work every time.

Beyond thirty feet it's a bit tedious to set up, but the flex's include a special cloth cover you put on the 580ex (or II) and a special base, that prevents the interference. I haven't had any setups with the flash more than 30 feet away so I can't comment on how well it works, but I've seen some videos showing using the cloth covers and the flashes work even over a 100 feet away.

On the 580ex II there is a special mod you can have done for about $50 that cuts down the interference so the cloth bag is not necessary.

There is also a optional special plastic cover available for the flashes that in some cases you can use instead of the cloth bag.
