Merging of my son and Rocky Mountain waterfalls

We were hiking in the Rocky Mountains and came across this beautiful waterfall. I placed my camera and tripod down stream and first shot my son. He then stepped out of the shot and I took the shot of the falls to show the motion. I then merged the two.

Very clever I must say but I'm a bit bothered by the exposure on the water fall. Not that it's not pretty at slower shutter speeds but the long exposure caused it to blow out. I deal with this in two ways, either shoot at dusk or dawn for slow exposures on waterfalls or use a smaller aperture to let less light in for longer exposures in brighter lighting.
I'm pretty sure this could have been managed with one shot at the correct exposure....
I'm also a bit concerned about the crop on his ankles.
