Quick trip through Oregon

Some shots from a quick trip through Oregon last weekend (along with dseidman).

#1: First stop - Cannon Beach. Sunset was great, but low tide and LOTS of people made photography difficult.

#2: After Cannon Beach, we made a 6 hour drive to Crater Lake, there was too much cloud cover for color at sunrise, but a few hours later there were some sun breaks:

#3: On the way back from Crater Lake to Bandon, there are some cool waterfalls, this one is Toketee Falls:

#4: After that, it was sunset at the beach in Bandon, OR, the light had a lot of potential, but petered out right at sunset. But there were some good opportunities the next morning under moonlight. This shot was a 3 minute exposure taken well before dawn:

#5: A one minute exposure right at sunrise:

#6: After that it was up to the Cascades near Sisters, OR. The road to Proxy Falls was closed due to a forest fire, and the light at sunset at Sparks Lake wasn't very good (so no photos!). After checking the forecast it looked like it would be overcast so decided to go to the Gorge (sleeping at Trillium Lake at Mt. Hood in case the light looked good in the morning - it didn't!). This shot is Wahkeena Falls:

#7: We then did the quick hike to Punchbowl Falls in Eagle Creek. Late summer means hardly any water flow so it was real easy to get out into the creek:

After that it was back home to catch up on some sleep!

    Ron -

Beautiful shots as usual. #4, #5, & #7 (love the leaf placement and the rocks showing thru the water) are my favorites. Do you ever sleep???

really like # 4 and 5, Ron... the misty effect of the 3-minute exposure on the water in #4 is marvelous, and #5 has a wonderfully moody feel to it... and the last one... that leaf on the rocks is perfect, if a bit incongruous - a bit early in the season for fall colors, isn't it?? ;)

Well, you guys zigged and zagged across Oregon like a couple of mad men, but it looks like it was worth it. The light and color in #1 is great; 4,5, and 6 are steller. My fav has got to be #4, a beautiful and peaceful image.

Thanks Stephanie, and no, I don't really sleep that much on these photo trips. I try to make the most of the time I have away from work, and end up sleep deprived in the process, but I've conditioned myself to operate on 3-4 hours of sleep a day on the weekends :D

The light wasn't really cooperating at Bandon, so I thought I might be able to make something interesting by doing some really long exposures. And yes, that leaf is about 2 months early (or 10 months late), and it may or may not have been on that rock originally, but hey... :D

Thanks Phil, yeah, we were all over the place trying to chase down a good forecast (about 1,500 miles during the trip). One of these days I'm going to stay in the same spot for awhile and take it easy and ignore the weather report. These trips are good for scouting, I now have a bunch of spots in central Oregon that I want to return to under better conditions, even though I didn't get any keepers from this trip.

These look much better on my Mac than on my iPad. I couldn't figure out why you even bothered to post #2 until just now. It is quite beautiful on a real monitor. Another excellent series, Ron.

#4 is a real winner. That was before dawn?! Where did the golden light come from on the rock?

The light is from the moon (about 80% illumination) which was front and partially side-lighting the rock. The shot was taken at 5:30 AM, about 70 minutes before sunrise (and 40 minutes before civil twilight). The exposure was f/5.6 ISO 400 for three minutes - so it was quite dark and it took me about 4 shots to nail the focus. On the LCD it didn't look as good but adjusting the white point in post processing fixed it.

I especially love the shot of Cannon Beach. One of my favorite movies growing up was filmed there. Looks like you captured it perfectly. Nice

Thanks - if I had more time off I'd be able to stay in one place longer and not feel as let down when the light didn't cooperate for a day or two. This trip I hit a few new spots that I'll try and go back to under better conditions.

Thanks, I like shooting the beach under the moonlight (backlit or front lit), the last time I was in Bandon I had a cool shot under the moonlight but realized when I got it on the computer that it was just slightly out of focus, so I wanted to make sure I got this one right :D

Super series. Really love your Bandon shots, but #4 is stunning. A very crisp image with incredible light and also softness from the long exposure. Really well done. Also, nice job on the removing the people on 1, btw. Now if you can only do that in real life...

These are beautiful shots...especially #4 and #7...Man, the light on 4 is incredible! And 7 makes me want to hike Eagle Creek before fall settles in...although maybe I could catch the one week when the leaves are really nice...

I hope you make it back to Central Oregon when the weather is good. It is a beautiful place. So many great locations! I'd love to see your pictures if you do. (I'd especially like to see you catch Crater Lake when the light is just right...there is nothing like that blue.)

No kidding! I wish I could apply some of my "poor man's Photoshop" techniques on people like I do on branches and leaves :D

Thanks! Last year fall color peaked in the gorge around October 23rd, you should definitely try and check it out if possible (Silver Falls State Park is also good around the same time).

My first time at Crater Lake with a camera was earlier this year in winter, it was one of the best sunrises I have ever seen:

I'm hoping to get an equivalent shot in summer but it might have to wait until next year. There's also a bunch of mountains in Oregon I want to photograph (Hood, Jefferson, the Three Sisters, etc.). Too many places and not enough time! :D

Sweet, I was there two weeks last year (last week of September and first week of October), I split most of the time between Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and then hit Death Valley by way of Zion near the end when the forecast turned overcast. You'll be able to get the elk rut which is always entertaining.
