Yesterday I visited some friends and got the chance to test my new softbox! I did it out in the garden, with trees in the background.

It was totally dark so it was really hard to manually focus. Anyone got any good suggestions to find the correct focus point when it is pitch black?

C&C welcome! :thumb

I've been intrigued by strobist work but I have yet to try this type of thing outdoors.
Are you using a unit with a modeling light or an EX series flash unit with a softbox?

I must say though, I really like this....great work!

    I used a Canon speedlight 430EX in a 28" Wescott Apollo Softbox.

I am pretty pleased with my test shots! I can`t wait to try this during daytime.

I love the black background. The background was actullay some pine-trees and other garden-stuff. But you can`t see any of it in the photo!

Keep a small flashlight with you and shine it on your subject when you are ready to focus. Once focused turn it off and take your shot.

The softbox worked well and you got some nice lightingthumb.gif

NICE lighting! Two things can help in the dark - one is the focus assist of something like an ste2 transmitter (it really does help!), but if you're strobist-style, you'll be using a manual flash. Otherwise, as Michael says, a small flashlight to light the area you want to focus and you're good to go.

    Excellent results with a speed-light.
As mentioned, a flashlight will be very helpful

    Thank you for the tips.
Next time I will try with a flash.
I took several photos but only this one and another photo were in focus.

So much fun with the softbox, and now I want more strobes! :D
