This was done with a Canon A70 pocket digital - I can't wait for next year with my 20D! Style question: Should the kids have been looking more toward the camera or is this shot fairly OK?

    JMH,

I just adored parts of this photo, and I felt it had a certain "love" that I wanted to isolate from the background.

I decided that the kids were just a bit underexposed and could have used a bit of fill lighting. I created a quick and dirty mask to seperate them from the background. I used a combination of USM, Curves and Levels to create the effect of fill lighting.

I decided that I liked the background, but the photo needed to have less of it and it would be nice to have it a bit OOF. Since the background was now a seperate element, I used some Saturation adjustments to get the colors up in the flowers, then I blurred them with a Gausian Blur until their empahasis was reduced. I also cropped in and used an 8"x10" cropping format.

All in all, this is a very touching photograph. I hope I didn't wreck it.
