Resizing image for avatar

Hi guys! I'll take this chance to thank you all for the great place DGrin is. It's a while since I expressed my appreciation.

I recently did a sp which I thought I might use as my avatar for a break. The info says it must be a particular maximum size, this way or that. Well, this sp is a 60MB tiff! I am plain out of ideas how to reduce it to a max of 19.5KB.:huh No help is given with the size stipulation, one has to go away and fret about it, as I have been doing. I do know about Saving for Web in Photoshop, but though I convert the file to 0 quality sRGB jpeg it's still some big MB size, and in Save for the Web I can reduce it to 1/4 MB. That's still a long ways to go!:D

Please excuse my dumbness, and give me a hand, fellas.

BTW, I uploaded the same image as a 1MB file to my Zenfolio site. Guess what, it did all the resizing for me automatically. Neat eh? - http://www.brosepix.com/about.html

Best.

You open the file in PS, then you crop it to 80px on the long side (the limit on Dgrin Avatars). You save for web, and it's done.

    Here are two versions

    998078807_UhrGf-O.jpg

    998078806_VBwqc-O.jpg

SmugMug would automatically give you the same thing you say you did on your Zen size - we make 8 display copies, from giant (X3, 1600 pixels wide) down to tiny thumbs (100px wide).

Thanks very much, Andy.thumb.gif I think I did pretty much what you describe, and Save for Web kept opening the edited file as the full jpg version, so I was getting nowhere.

    I'll try again.

Or steal one of yours!mwink.gif But I should try to crack it myself...

Sometimes I will take a screen shot and drag it back into Photoshop as a JPEG. After that, I will size it up as required.\

Sounds like Andy has a great tip too!

I might take the jpg I posted to DGrin (~1MB) into PS and start from that. In my version of PS, Save for Web goes haywire, in my hands at least, after a lot of adjustments to the original.

you could just use the ones I made :D
Or ask me to re-do it after you edit the original again.

    Up to you.

rolleyes1.gif Yeah, Andy, I was quick to realise that possibility, as you can see from my edit above! Thanks for doing that, and your offer!
