These are wild sulfur-crested cockatoos from the forest under Mt Wellington, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. They landed on our deck and I snuck a quick shot. This is a close crop. Will be better prepared next visit. The wind was gusting strongly and mussing their crests.

Wow. I want to be so unprepared some day. My pictures of cockies when I -was- prepared aren't nearly this good! Very impressive. thumb.gif

Yes, they look robust and healthy. Maybe that's in good measure because their environment is also. They are very sociable creatures, though being wild these have their approachability limit. I love how they look you steadily straight in the eye. You feel like you are totally "seen". They are not to be encouraged to become too house familiar, because in a very short time they will literally tear all your exposed woodwork to shreds. Very costly! There are different species of cockatoo here, including some black ones, which are a lot more reclusive, but spectacular! I had the chance to capture a black and yellow one closeup in flight a while ago when I was in the bush, but I blew it with too slow shutter speed - the light was very low.

    Thanks for your comment, Ric.

Thanks, Lindiwe. Well, a bit of luck always helps, of course, but really awesome stuff like you see in this forum is earned through long difficult practice, I think. I can't make any pretense to be at that level. I had the 24-105 on my 40D, but a better choice is the 70-200 for short-mid distance. These birds are so interactive with you they are a lot of fun to shoot!

    Sweet capture!
C&C always welcome. I can't learn if I don't know what I've done wrong or could do better.

Hey how is the ME treating you? I was in Saudi for 6yr. Know someone who lives in Dohar, and another friend has frequently gone there to shoot the architecture.
