The womens volleyball team here at Penn State played in a tournament recently, and I was able to get some shots from their first game.

    You're too far away from the action for whatever lens you're using. The action simply isn't framed tight enough. Here's a random vball photo to illustrate:

    you need the action to fill the frame. Once you're close enough (or if you have a lot of money, have a lens long & fast enough) then you'll be able to work on getting better. But you gotta be able to fill the frame first. That can be difficult at the collegiate level - if you want to shoot volleyball, shooting HS level is a good way to learn - especially JV games where they're probably a little more lenient on people taking photos from floor level.
