Registration required to view galleries...

I've noticed a number of professional photographers (not using smugmug) that require registration to view their galleries.
Typically all they require is an email address. That way they can communicate with viewers of the gallery. For example, once I register and view the gallery once, I get an email when that gallery is about to expire (or be taken down).
Is this possible? If not, has it been considered.
Smugmug probably doesn't want to keep a database of email addresses but they could implement a feature where I get an email every time someone registers.

Once they have registered, they won't be required to register again (similar to entering a password).
What say ye?
