SB-900 AF assist light issue

I've been asking a lot of questions on here lately and first of all, i would like to thank everyone who took time to give suggestions.

I have an SB900, that i use to shoot parties, always low light, The red AF assist light is a big help. it used to project a red cross, and other grid lines, now i only get a vertical line.

i tried using another lens, resetting the flash, and updating the firmware, changing the modes on the flash and camera, changing the metering mode, and the AF mode. nothing worked. the batteries are also fresh.

the only way i could get the full grid on was to use the dynamic AF mode switch, i normally shoot with single point

is there any way i can get the cross in single point mode?

The AF assist, cross and vertical, will be based on AF point and focal length used.
Try single point AFS in the center focus point selected.
