"virtual" galleries

I thought I'd post about a change I've made to my site; you can see it here.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I wanted to create a collection of photos that I had already loaded up to my smugmug site in particular galleries. The collection was on a different basis to how I'd categorised them in the galleries. I also wanted to be able to direct people to these collections.

Keywords to the rescue. I allocated a 'collection' keyword to each photo I wanted in the collection and then created a 'page' (just an empty gallery) onto which I loaded a link to each collection...does that make sence :scratch ? you can see what I mean here: http://bilgolaplateau.smugmug.com/gallery/775696 - I have not finished loading up images yet so there arn't many to see.

To tidy thinks up I got rid of the keywords from showing under the images by putting #keywords {display: none;} in the stylsheet customization box - I didn't think that would work from what I'd read elsewhere but it seems to have.

Is there a better way to do the same thing?

That's a great idea! I asked a while back if there was a way to have an image in two galleries without uploading it twice (there's not), but you've just helped me realize that keywords are really the answer to the "problem" I was trying to solve.

I've got a gallery for each event, but wanted to be able to show a "gallery" of pictures one sub-group of people. Keywords work great.

And I like what you did to create that "virtual gallery" itself. I assume it's an empty gallery with all the text ("The following are a collection of photos ... United Kingdom") in the description - is that right?

Nice solution! I have the same problem right now. I take a bunch of pictures in one day, they ALL aren't suitable for everyone to see, but I still want to back them up. What I've been doing is uploading ALL of my pics to an Archive category, and then re-uploading the pics suitable for sharing in a public gallery.

Your solution WOULD work for me, but unfortunatley there is no thumbnail picture preview of the gallery, thats a big issue for me! :cry Its just not as nice!
