Youth lacrosse CC

Hello Everyone,

I recently started photographing youth lacrosse (primarily my sons team) and would appreciate some CC. I've always gotten good comments from parents, which is great to hear, but I have never put my pictures out there for review by other photographers.

All of these pictures were taken with a Canon 70-200mm 2.8L on a Canon 20D (although I just got a 7D a couple weeks ago). Generally I set the camera to AV mode and let it determine the shutter speed, and have the focus set to AI Servo.

Any comments and critiques would be greatly appreciated.

YOu have a nice start here. Faces are exposed well and you've got some good action here.
The biggest advice is you need to stay low - a number of these shots you're shooting down on your subjects and you always want to be at their level or lower. You also need to resist the urge to shoot action too far away as some shots appear over-cropped. When you crop heavily you lose detail.

So, off to a very good start. Get lower and frame tighter - more zoom or be patient until action gets close and those two things will really boost your shots in a hurry!

Thank you for your comments. I have always thought having a longer lens would help since the field is so large and I am actually looking at getting one.

Your advice about getting low is appreciated. That's something that I hadn't really thought about, but after looking at the pictures with that in mind it makes perfect sense.

I am working on the patience :D I have to keep telling myself to focus on the picture and not get caught up in the game, which is a little difficult since I've always been there as a fan as well as a photographer.

Again, thank you for the comments and advice. I will definately keep them in mind as I continue to learn.

I agree with Johns points. #2 for example - if you were lower you could have caught the faces of the team on the sidelines rather than cutting their heads off. Leaves distractions in the background that take away for your shot. #6 is a great shot - nice angel and they are both looking at the ball in the net. Some very nice captures there.
I started shooting my sons teams(9 to 12 year olds) a few years ago and love lacrosse now. I did a few HS games and boy what a difference in the overall speed of the game.
