some nice shots. But you have to get the flash away from the camera to get rid of the red-eye. Personally, I prefer to mount it on my monopod below:
Thats how I have mine but I'm using it remote with my on camera flash thats the problem.

it's not the size of the lens that matters... It's how you focus it.

whoever dies with the biggest coolest piece of glass, wins!
Thank you I will try that!!!

I've got a D300, SB900 flash, Nikkor 70-200 AFS VR lens.
Must admit, I never thought of attaching the flash to my monopod! What a great idea! Can you guys elaborate? For example, what cords and brackets should I buy to use this setup?
Forgot to mention that my 70-200 is an f2.8. But I can still never get enough light.
Gradywhite first of all thank you and second Johng is the one you need to ask the more technical questions. This is only the second time I tryed using my flash on my monopod. That saying, I use my D300 and use the on camera flash for my slave with my SB-800. Make sure you set your camera flash to commander mode so you won't get the red eye thanks to donek for that tip. My glass used is prime 300 2.8. I still need a lot of pratice but I do see promise with the last shots to keep trying to get great shots.

If you are not allowed to use flash, then you need f2.8 and ISO 3200-6400. The key is to set your exposure for the FACE, not the uniform. Even at 3200-6400 ISO you may be at 1/320-1/400 shutter and the endzones may be too dark for anything useable.

Greetings everyone. Using johng's system of attaching my flash to the bottom of my monopod, I was finally able to achieve dramatically better results at last night's 7pm soccer game! Examples posted below. Not one image was ruined (or required editing) to remove red-eye. I also see a marked improvement in illumination, color and clarity, even when the player is 50 yards away from the camera. I even like the ones in which the big shadows were thrown up on the big blue wall behind the players. It's spooky looking. Good stuff for Halloween season! Frankly, I'm happy to be getting green-looking grass! Here are my settings: D300 set in Dynamic Area Continuous AF (21 point), 3D Matrix Metering, 1/640s, f/2.8, Nikkor 70-200mm lens, ISO 3200, SB-900 flash unit set in iTTL/BL/FP power zoom mode, editing, cropping, sharpening and noise reduction using LR3. Can't wait for the next game!:ivar
