Night Shooting Question

Is it necessary to use the lens hood during night shooting? :dunno

    I don't use it in the day time so I'm not much help.

    I think it does at some extra protection to your lens though. Don't know if you are concerned about that. I don't think you need to worry about sun glare:)

    It depends on the lens you're using. Most lenses I would say no. But my wide angle that is pretty sensitive to flare, I sometimes still need to use it.

    A lens hood will help minimise flare, especially from oblique lighting that is not uncommon in night shooting. Also, loose the filters. They can compound flare.

    I always use a hood for protection against collisions. Since all of my lenses have hoods that reverse when not in use, there's no downside to it. As Jenn said, they can also reduce flare from streetlights at night.
