How are duplicates handeled

I just tried to upload two videos of which one turned out to be a duplicate. I hade "Skip duplicates" ticked. When trying to find out why the file hadn't uploaded i discovered that the "original" to this duplicate had been placed in SmugVault, (not by me) and the second time i started an upload of the "duplicate" it seem to start fine. Another oddity is that the most recent file in my upload log is the ancient "original".

If I choose "Allow duplicates" and upload again, will the "original" pop back from the vault?

The original, uploaded aboutv a year ago:

    Malte,

I am afraid that changing the Allow Duplicates will not bring the video out of the vault. Sorry. It just does not work that way.

Even though you had Skip Duplicates checked, the system detected the original video with the same name and bundled it.

If you want 2 versions, you would want to change the name of the second upload so that they are not bundled.

How are they bundeled, I'm not finding the one I attempted to upload either on my site or in the vault?

How do I get the original back to my site from the vault?

Why does skip duplicates push the original file into the vault and scraps the upload, makes no sense to me?

Malte, you can always write our heroes for fast help 365 days a year. To get your vault file back, hover over main image and save the file. Or go to your vault and save it from there. (control panel, settings tab)

I try not to post here and start a ticket at the helpdesk. Do you mean I have to download the file to my computer from the vault and reupload it to the gallery? That would trigger the site to process and compress the file again right? Now I could find the original of this file in my archives, upload it to the gallery and scrap the one in the vault. Isn't the upload behaviour broken here though?

Two things from my previous posts:

Why does skip duplicates push the original file into the vault and scraps the upload, makes no sense to me?

Another oddity is that the most recent file in my upload log is the ancient "original"

Malte, if you have Archive videos:? Yes No set to yes in your vault settings page it will vault the original file. If not set, we only keep our display copies. You can download the vaulted copy by clicking the vault icon on the thumbnail in the SmugMug viewing style. That will take you to the vault for that file and show you any bundled copies. That will let you save any that are available for download. Skip duplicates sends the original to the vault as it thinks you want to replace it with a new display copy.

    Thanks Doc,

Do you know why the old original was shown as the most recent upload in my log after it had been pushed into the vault by a new file with the same name.

So if I restore this file from my personal backup, set the simple uploader to "Allow duplicaates" and reupload the new file with the same name, they will coexist in the gallery?

To bad you have to sort videos by upload date since videos have no concept of "Date taken". Will put this old video first. eek7.gif

I think this is a flaw in the uploader. There needs to be another option, like "Send older duplicates to SmugVault", or "Replace duplicates" could work this way, if there is a vault on the account.

This doesn't make sense either, since the newer "version" I uploaded, that pushed the original into the vault, was scrapped... :cry It's not in the gallery or the vault.
