That's a lot of purple. Look nice John. Just what I'd do... crop 4 as vertical, crop out dead space above and tiny bit below in 7. crop 8 to put him in right 1/3 to eliminate 31 from the frame and correct horizon. I think I might crop 6 tighter too. The guy on the left is interesting, but the ones on the right don't add much.

John, these are awesome!!!! I've got 2 questions for you. 1. What equipment did you use? & 2. I live in VA and have been to JMU. It's a beautiful campus. Did you get any good pix of the landscape/campus?

I used a Canon 1D Mark III and a 400 f2.8L. I was only there for the game, so I didn't any shots of the campus. It is beautiful country though.....

Thanks Sean....I'll look for some tighter crops in the rest of the shots from this game

    Shoot tight and crop tighter
I have always subscribed to the "shoot tight, crop tighter" philosophy, but have recently started to shoot a little wider. I think that having a liitle more info in a photo helps tell the story better. I still shoot tight when called for, it just depends on who I am shooting for. I have lots more to go through from this game so I will post some tighter crops for you guys....Thanks for the comments

    Hi John,

I like your photos, that purple and gold(yellow) looks challenging to photograph in the bright sun but after the sun goes down, it sure pops.

One thing I see and it's something my sports mentor pounded into my head (that's why i'm making the comment). Be careful making the players into amputees :-) (i'm not being insensitive to people that are amputee's, it's how he taught me). The kickoff return is the one that I'm referring to, I can see some of his left calf and leg but it's the kind of image, I'm talking about.

Football, Soccer, Field Hockey, Lax are a few sports that you can really do this with straight on shots.

Thanks Pat. I have actually never thought about cut off limbs from the perspective of being hidded behind another part of the body. I have cut plenty of limbs by just missing in camera crops. I see exactly what meen though. Here is another shot from the same sequence with nothing amputated......
