More sub-category strangeness...

Sent this email to SM support:

"EVERY TIME I try to use Subcategories, strange things happen. I really wish they'd make them easier to deal with. I have to contact someone pretty much every time I try.

Right now I'm having 2 problems. First of all, for some reason, a whole subcategory--which was working fine--seems to have been deleted and the galleries within that subcategory have been moved to the general Sports category. Have no idea how or why this happened. Subcategory was UCC3: Renegades.

The other problem is (again) trying to get a subcategory to show up so I can upload photos to it. Created a subcategory--Ring of Combat XXXI--within Sports. Doesn't show up. I seem to remember something about them not showing up if nothing was in them (still don't understand the reasoning) but I don't remember what I have to do in order to be able to upload photos to it.

I know I'm not the only one who complains about this. I really wish they'd spend some time and make it easier to work with subcategories..."

I really don't understand why they can't fix this and make them easier to use. I know I've posted about this before and others have complained but it really is annoying. EVERY time I use them I have problems getting them to work properly. And now, as you can see, one whole subcategory has disappeared!!!! I've posted images from this subcategory on various boards--and they still show up! What the heck is going on????

As far as creating the new one I'm trying to in order to upload photos from a job the other night, I know, has to have something in it to display. Just can never figure out how to get anything into it easily. I ALWAYS have to fiddle around until it magically appears.

Come on SM, can you PLEASE get your act together on this? I'm really sick of dealing with this and it's just stupid how it's set up.

Oh, forgot to post the path to the subcategory which is not showing up (UCC). If you check out this link, you'll see the photo displays just fine:

    http://www.farmerfotography.com/Sports/UCC-3/Fight-1/MG2476/1003163719_S58qx-L.jpg

However, the subcategory is NOT THERE. If you go to the sports section of the website, you'll see the subcategory isn't there and ALL of the galleries I'd created INSIDE the subcategory are now moved from the UCC 3 subcategory to they overall Sports area.

I've also created a subcategory--Ring of Combat XXXI--which I cannot for the life of me get to display in order to upload photos to. I'd kinda like to get this working as the fighters then go to my site, look for the event and buy photos. So this is potentially costing me money at this point.

It's this kind of stuff which keeps making me consider other services. This is just ridiculous how they can't get this very important part of the software to work better.

    Hi Rick,

I just replied to your ticket and I'd suggest that we keep the discussion on the ticket and not both places. For others that come across this thread a short explanation:

"The subcategory UCC-3 doesn't exist. Direct photo links work at all times even if you assign galleries to a different category or move photos. In fact, it doesn't really matter what's in the link as long as you keep the image ID and image key at the end in tact. You could replace the (sub)category / gallery nice name by random text and it would still work:
    http://www.yourdomain.com/ThisIsATextCategory/TestSubCategory/TestGalleryName/TestFIleName/1003163719_S58qx-L.jpg "
(the link won't work as I removed Rick's domain to not get that test link out to Google - to check out the link, just replace yourdomain.com by Rick's domain name)

I'm putting it here so others who are experiencing similar issues can chime in with the hopes they'll FINALLY get their act together and fix this ridiculousness they call subcategories.

As I replied to your email, I certainly had the subcategory at one point and I DEFINATELY didn't delete it yet it wasn't there any longer.

I get frustrated EVERY time I try to use subcategories because of the way they are implemented.

Perhaps you just change it, but UCC-3 exists now:

I didn't change it. The subcategory just disappeared. I (originally) created it--started uploading to it after beating my head against the wall (again) in order to get it to work properly, finished uploading to it and never touched it again.

I just recreated it because I couldn't figure out what happened.
