"Recent Photos" again displaying recent crops & moves instead of truly recent photos

"Recent Photos" box is back to its old antics, such as when it was first introduced. It's displaying photos that were recently cropped, moved, etc. instead of actual recently added photos. This had been fixed for awhile. I believe it just changed today or yesterday. Before that, it was showing true, recently uploaded photos.

Anna Lisa can you link me to some examples? We have made no changes to the site in the last few days that I am aware of. I can take a look at the images and see if I can figure out what might have caused it.

My site is in my signature. If you go to my "Map & Newly Added" tab, http://www.winsomeworks.com/mymaps all the photos you see in my "Recent Photos" box were either cropped & moved, or color-corrected & moved, or their thumbnails were cropped recently, or I "made a copy" and moved it. The photos that were actually recently uploaded aren't showing there anymore, because these crops, corrections & moves replaced them. Some of the photos you see there were moved from locked archives to public galleries, but a bunch of them were already in a public gallery and were copied and in some cases changed in some way, then the copy put in another gallery.

I do a lot of this type of thing, because I have some color galleries http://www.winsomeworks.com/Art/Cascade-of-Colors that are monochromatic collections, often gleaned one at a time from other galleries & their thumbs cropped to square. Those galleries were the destinations for some of the "recent photos" you see, but not all. Anyway, that's why I know this behavior in "recent photos" isn't normal. I check it pretty often, and it's been behaving correctly for a long time now & only showing public, uploaded photos... not adjusted copies. Thanks-- won't be able to be much help after tonight, because I'm traveling w/o a computer.

Doc, I was just looking into this again. Nothing's changed in recent weeks as far as I can tell-- "Recent Photos" is still displaying the wrong photos. If you look on my page: http://www.winsomeworks.com/mymaps that's supposed to be showing recent photos.... well, every single one of those photos were photos that were not recently uploaded. Instead, they're photos that I used the "make a copy" tool, then moved to various other galleries. Which gallery, etc. does not make a difference. It seems every photo I copy & move ends up in "Recent Photos". Yes, if I do upload photos, they will end up there also, the way they're supposed to. But these other "copies" shouldn't be there. I don't plan to upload anything in the next 12 hrs., so whatever you see in "Recent Photos" were copies of photos that were added either a couple years ago or much earlier this summer.

The recent photos smart gallery on the homepage was a really nice feature...my feeds are visible but they aren't being picked up :-(

Is this tweakable?

Nancy, I an not real clear on what you are asking. The bug has been reported but then you say "your feeds are visible but not getting picked up". Can you clarify for me what is not working with that?

Nancy, I saw another report from another user that I think is the same as what you are describing. I replied in that thread and I will post the same reply here so that you see it.

Sorry about that. The process that handles keyword indexing, and the recent photos etc do occasionally get backed up after we have down times. It can take a while for it to catch up. Lets wait a bit and see if things clear up. If not, I can get the Ops team to take a look once they sign on.

This bug is really getting old.... 9 months old, to be exact, not counting however long it went on before I reported it. It was then bugged to be fixed back in November, 5 months ago. (incidentally, it had been fixed before... last year sometime, & worked correctly for a bit. Then it started working incorrectly again, if you see my posts #1 & #3.) Anyway, to put it succintly, Recent Photos is still displaying recently cropped, color-corrected, moved, etc. photos rather than recently uploaded photos. We would love to have the fix back again.

Hmmm, no answer. Well, right now it doesn't seem to be showing all the crops & moves, etc. the way it had been. (and that's a good thing!) But some recent more recent photos also are not showing up. So... some improvement, but still something not working quite correctly. Unless... some of my most recent photos that don't show up right now are in an Unlisted gallery. It seems I would still see them in the "Recent Photos" if I'm logged in... at least, that's how "Recent Photos" used to work. If it doesn't (or shouldn't) work that way, please correct me.

Yes, honestly this is a very poor showing on the part of SmugMug. Such a basic request and yet they seem unable to respond or resolve this very basic request. I'm seriously thinking of finding a more responsive photo hosting solution. It's amazing because SmugMug seems to have such a great name in this arena. Apparently they're grown to the point where they can't keep up with demand? Maybe a good time for some new competition...

I feel your pain. I think what's tough right now is that a lot of Smug people are working hard developing the new design, & bug fixes & forum response seem lots slower than normal. (that reasoning is only my conjecture; I have no way of knowing why for sure-- just know there are a lot of outstanding bugs & even some that have never gotten a response from "above" such as a number of bugs in the new Color Effects behavior for "Many Photos"). However, check your "Recent Photos" now-- is there any improvement? I'm seeing some recent photos that I added to public galleries.

I never got an answer to whether I should be able to see recent additions to my Unlisted galleries in "Recent Photos" if I'm logged in,(I don't see them) so if you're checking, look at additions that are definitely open to the public. I also learned something new the other day: If I edit a photo in PicNik, and choose "Make a new copy" at the end rather than "Replace Photo", that new copy will show up in "Recent Photos", which I can sorta understand-- even though I'm sure it would be preferable to most folks that that not happen.

To me "Most Recent" photos are just that... the one's that are someone's most recent photos (based on the capture date/time). If the logic in this section is meant to be more like "Most Recently Added" photos, then the section title should be changed to "Most Recently Added", not "Most Recent". So to me, it's still confusing from a site visitor perspective.

Uhh, well, unfortunately your understanding of "Recent Photos" parameters (i.e. what it should be doing ) is in fact incorrect. "Recent Photos" should be displaying only the site owner's most recent additions to their site. And I do think most users would expect that, rather than what your understanding was.

I mean... think about it... if that box always displayed the most recent based on capture date/time, it could stay static for months at a time, which is not what most of us want. I might, for example, upload a bunch of photos I snapped yesterday, and they'd be there in "Recent..." Ok, good. But then I go process & upload photos I took 5 yrs. ago, 2 months ago, etc. for the next few weeks. I'd want my guests to see that I've added these "new" photos, even if they were actually captured long ago. I want my guests to see what's new on the site... i.e... what they may not have seen the last time they visited! but instead, they'd constantly see those "same old" photos I happened to snap yesterday in "Recent Photos". See what I mean? In fact, many of us have been asking for a "Recent Galleries" box, which would in many cases be much more interesting than just recent photos. Hope that makes sense. If you really want to show off your most recent captures, I think there may be a way to do that with a Smart Gallery rule or some hack, but you may have more luck asking in the Customization forum.

But anyway, not to get off the track too much... yes, the "Recent Photos" box appears to be working better, but not 100% correctly yet. Feedback here from Smug experts about expected behavior for the box (i.e. logged in/not logged in, Unlisted gallery photos, etc.) would be very welcome. Then we could be more help in bugging it.

I think it would be better to have the option to define the listing of "Recent Images" so that it allows us to sort by "Most Recently Shot", "Most Recently Added", "Most Recently Updated", or ???. That's all that I was really trying to say...

Ahh, yes, I see what you mean, and I do agree -- many visitors especially are unclear on what "Recent Photos" really means. As you can see on my NavBar, I call it "Newly Added" for the page where I have the "Recent" box, just to help clear this up: http://www.winsomeworks.com/mymaps . Right now, my box seems to be working correctly, except for adding the PicNik edits. I should say it seems to be working correctly by my understanding of SmugMug's parameters for this box. It's a shame this thread gets no love, since it would be nice to know if something's been fixed recently and also if it really is doing what it's supposed to be doing! Are you seeing photos in your box that shouldn't be there? (or missing ones that are newly added?) If you want a box showing recently shot photos, I'm pretty sure there's a way to do that.. or if not a box, a gallery feed... like I said, ask in Customization.

I'm not seeing any "edited photos" showing up under "Recent Photos" anymore, but I haven't added any earlier photos for a while, so I can't tell you if "Most Recent" is showing "most recently captured" or "most recently added".

Wow. It's just amazing to me that this, even in a Bug reporting thread, has gotten absolutely no response from anyone who should be letting us know what the status is. Nothing. This is exactly what I feared. New stuff coming down the pike, & old issues just get left in the dust. Oh well, I guess we're on our own with this one.

Once again... "Recent Photos" is simply not working. You know, "Recent Photos" is one of the main tools to help people find the new stuff on our sites. It's just highly frustrating that in years this will not work, and/or will not stay working. Could someone really truly look into this, for once & for all? I added a bunch of new photos (uploaded from my computer) and they are simply not showing in my "Recent Photos" box. Yes, it's showing a few photos that I copied from another gallery that have been there for ages. But I made new galleries, added photos from my computer, made them public, & none of them show up. SmugMug, this is a very major feature on the site! Please take a few hours & make it work. Please!! If the gallery where you collect them from is 'unlisted', the images won't show in the resents.

From the help page, "Recent Photos - you choose how many (excludes hidden and SmugVaulted photos, and photos in protected galleries)"
