Congratulations on the new (to you) camera and lenses. clap.gif

I'll let others with more Nikon experience help you with the battery longevity.

A few things I do on my D200... 1. minimize the use of the LCD, 2. set "Monitor Off" mode and 3. set the "Auto Meter Off" mode.

The D200 is a battery discharger in itself. rolleyes1.gif

I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong, shooting jpeg on the D300 will use significantly less battery.

You know that D300 actually has really great battery life, why should you worry?

How about a battery grip? I'm pretty sure it just might increase the amount of time you can shoot... :p
