local gain control

Most, if not all digital cameras have a gain control mechanism that alters the sensitivity of the sensor. Typically, this gain control is global, i.e. work across the full extent of the sensor.

Does anyone know if there are any camera's on the market, or in development that allow a spatially localized manual or automatic gain control.

Many thanks

Most modern dSLR cameras have the ability to vary the tone curve to accommodate some level of either shadow or highlight, or both, tonal adjustments.

Beyond that, no, there is no real masking done in camera or overlay capability. Those functions are accomplished using a single or multiple combined exposures, captured in RAW for maximum dynamic range, and then post processed in software and on a full computer, where all sorts of local and global adjustments are possible.
