I'm looking for an external flash for my Nikon D90. I ran across Nissin. I'm looking at their newest model the Di866.

http://www.nissindigital.com/en/Di866-1.html

Are Nissin flashes any good or should I go with a Nikon flash?

If you know of a good off brand flash for Nikon with good reviews, feel free to chime in.... Thanks!!

obviously someone uses nissin flashes but I would not.....but then zi know nothing of them
    ......"off brand" I would recommend...{asw I have used all the brands I now mention}
total manual flash - vivatar 285hv........ttl flashes - Sigma..not going to recommend a
model let your pocket book decide, or Metz or sunpak.......and of course Nikon.......
if you want to learn the CLS system of Nikon then go nikon...........

I have run across your posts. This answer is pretty much "par for the coarse." Thanks!! I'm going with Nissin...thumb.gif

I hope what you see when you say par for the course is sage advise from an experienced photographer!

I've yet to try a cheaper fix for my Nikon's simply because I figured, with me being new to photography, I'd do well to stick to the flashes made-for my camera. I needed to take the potential for a bad flash out of the exposure equation. Consequently, now I have a gaggle of Nikon flashes and am very happy with them!

I am going to add some flashes for my Canon now, but again, will prob add using Canon versus others.

The Nice thing about asking a question such as yours is you'll get lots of differing answers.

you can get SB800 and 600 for decent prices off ebay....but make sure that off brand flash has a very low trigger voltage(under 6volts or you need a Wein SAfe Sync) as that can fry your camera.....hence the reason I only recommend a few of the other guys......also I returned the sigmas I had because some of my set upts take time and I had to keep resyncing the Sigmas to my nikon camera......for me it was too much of a pain....Ziggy however likes them.

I would do indepth research before connecting an off brand flash to my camera....I really should not have used the term off brand for Vivatar, Sigma, Sunpak or Metz as they are very reputable, reliable companies and have been around for many Decades and their engineers keep up with the camera companies to make sure their product will not harm a camera as that could easily put them out of business and they try to get as close to the camera companies flashes as possible without infringing on patent rights and such.

What does DpReview, Fred Miranda, Luminous Landscape and other reputable reviewers say of this Nissin Flash??????

I see a rather high number of reported problems for the Nissin flashes, compared to the relative low number of units in the field. (Not all of the following are what I call legitimate complaints; too many "are" legitimate complaints.)

    http://www.google.com/#hl=en&expIds=17050,25657,26486,26488,26492,26496,26781,26885,26889&sugexp=ldymls&xhr=t&q=%2Bnissin+%2Bflash+%2Bproblem&cp=16&pf=p&sclient=psy&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=%2Bnissin+%2Bflash+%2Bproblem&gs_rfai=&pbx=1&fp=c6affe93747c32d0

I really do believe that the Sigma flashes are the third-party flashes with the greatest feature to cost ratio. I do believe that the Sigma flashes are capable of proper i-TTL operation. The model I would suggest for a Nikon application is the Sigma EF 530 DG Super in Nikon i-TTL configuration:

This model has most of the feature set of the Nikon SB800 at a price more like the SB600. I use 4 of the Sigma flashes and I have found them to be a very good value.

Yeah, I don't go much for that Sleepin on the J.o.b thang!

but if they'll work well for the Canon, then I am game to try one!

You make some great points. Nikon is the smart choice, but I wouldn't be happy with the SB600. The SB800 and SB900 are a little more than I want to spend because I won't be using it that much. I would rather put the savings towards another prime.

The reviews are mixed. People seem to be quite pleased with the new version with the latest serial numbers. The first ones shipped had a couple bugs.

    Thanks!!

The Sigma is a solid flash, and the price is great. I went with the Nissin for an extra 60 dollars. I'm taking the gamble and win or lose I will post my findings.

    Thanks!!
