I've heard heron, loon, egret, crane... I believe it's a heron, though I have no idea which type of heron.

It appears to be a young Great Blue Heron.

Hi tarapacheco, it is a great blue and it looks like it still has the plumes behind it's head which means it is still somewhere in the breeding season and not late fall as those disappear later, at least up in northern Canada where I live. Don't worry about the photoshop reply I don't even have it and I get that once in a while. I think it has a little to much blue overtones on the land and maybe that is what he means, but who knows? I see you are new here and most comments are meant to help but sometimes they don't explain enough with the critic so keep posting as most people do not have a lot of time and make thing quick and precise but are meant to be helpful.

Sure looks like a great blue heron to me... just juvenile & doesn't yet have the long plumage. The beak and cap look a little different in the juveniles too. I like the shot a lot. Nice job!

It's quite a good guide to birds in North America.
