    I just keep an extra battery in my pocket next to the money I saved, problem solved!

    If you hook up batteries "in series" you double the voltage. Perhaps he meant to say that the batteries are depleted "serially", where one battery is used first, then the next battery kicks in. That is the way the batteries in the laptops I have owned work.
