Anyone using Gmail? I have a recent problem.

Not sure where is the best place for this; so I would not be surprised if mods want to move it. But, this bunch knows about so much and I am not getting rapid answers (last day or so) from their own forum.

I had the Notifier from Google working fine and then installed a larger hard disk. After doing so and thinking that I had re-installed everything (didn't want to clone to avoid picking up gulches that had possibly developed over years) Didn’t get log in screen at startup for Notifier nor did I get any notifications (did have icon in tray). Have since applied Microsoft updates including SP3 to Win XP. I now get the login but still no notifications.

I have changed the Https settings on and off for both Gmail & Notifier to no avail. Still just icon in tray. If I go to my Gmail account my new mail IS in my inbox or all mail.

It just occurred to me that the problem (which came up at the same time I switched to a larger HD and re-installed OS, software, etc.) was at the same time Gmail went to https! Could this have broken something in Gmail Notifier by Google in Win XP? I have tried switching between HTTPS on and off for BOTH Gmail setting and Gmail Notifier setting to no avail.

Where do the notifications appear when using the Notifier by nexgenmedia? I liked the way the one by Google would change the color of an icon in the Taskbar even if the browser was not open. But. . . I have posted several messages about it not working anymore.

Any help greatly appreciated!
Jane B.

Do you read your email with a browser or with an application such as Outlook? If it's the later, then try following Google's help page for setting up POP/IMAP. If mail is on the Google server and not in your inbox; it's likely a problem with the setup.

I am reading my Gmail account with a browser (Firefox version 3.6.10). The mail shows up just fine in my inbox or all mail part of the site. I just can't get Notifier to work since putting in the new disk so that I know when something came in when I am not viewing the Gmail site. For example: my email notification from this site goes to my Gmail address. I was used to looking at the system tray for the darkened icon that indicated that a Gmail message has come in; check my inbox to see what and come here if it was a reply. Until I find a way to correct this I have to check the Gmail site every now and then to see what has come in while I am doing something else.

Thanks for any help you can give

When I did I discovered (after an additional search) that it pertains to Google Notifier which is for MAC not PC. The one I have been working with is Gmail Notifier by Google. As mentioned in the last paragraph of my first post in this thread there is one by nexgenmedia that I have not tried. In trying to look up things about it I am unsure where the notifications from it would appear.

Since I use a Mac, that's the page I got. Look for the one for the PC and follow the directions for setting it up.

Your problem is most likely a configuration issue.

I have been through so much about that I am at my wits end and looking for new eyes that might spot something I have not throught of. Also, very disappointed in their own forum and help.

    Thanks so much for trying.

Andy I thank you for your interest; but these are both things that I had already seen and tried many times. Neither https on or off for both Gmail and Notifier will correct the problem.

There is another notifier for Gmail by nexgenmedia that I have not tried. I asked earlier but none of you have said if you know anything about it. Do you???

    Thanks

I never did get the problem with Google’s Gmail Notifier figured out. BUT . . . the second post in this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/microsoft-windows-xp-vista/524269-help-anyone-using-google-s-gmail-notifier-win-xp-pro-sp3.html#post6796986 on another forum led me to one that is doing what I need. Some of the things on the first page of that site don’t seem to be included in what I got (suspect a difference in Win XP and later OSs); but, it is doing what I need. That is have a icon in the notification area of the taskbar that alerts me to when a Gmail comes in. This one doesn’t change color but blinks! If one or more have come in overnight it will blink when I boot my computer into Windows — even before starting Firefox (which is the browser that I use to read my Gmail).

Thanks to all that tried to help.
