Maximum number of keywords?

I read somewhere on the forum that the max number of keywords on smugmug was 30?!? I hope this wrong! If not I really have to rethink getting started with smugmug as my pictures are loaded with keywords in 2 languages. Why should there be a limit? Well, I hope I'm wrong...

Yes, 30. You can read more in our official documentation, too: http://www.smugmug.com/help/keywords-tags

Ok. As smugmug looks like a very nice and intelligent system, i guess there is a very very good reason for this restriction? Can't find any info about this. For me it seems strange, as more keywords makes it easier to describe photos.

So, if i upload photos with e.g. 50 keywords from Lightroom, only the 30 first will get through? Right?

Is this the case with other similar services like e.g photoshelter? :D

    Thanks for answering!

Yes, it's quite common to limit keywords, to avoid "keyword spam" and to ensure great site performance. If you have 50 in your photo, we'll only take the first 30.

Ok. Any plans to increase the limit? I want to have my images keyworded in 2 languages, so this limit is probably keeping me away from Smugmug :(

    In case it's any consolation...

In case it's any consolation... there used to be no limit at all; then it went to 15, under much protest and complaints. In fact, that's one of the major reasons that caused me to let my SmugMug account tick over, not closing it, but not exactly using it either. ... and now I notice the limit has been doubled to 30.

Then again, RedBubble has recently implemented a 'hard' limit of only 10 keywords (again, under much protest and complaints, with people actually leaving the site, or keeping their account only for the community on the site while moving their main activity elsewhere). 'Hard' limit meaning whenever you add, or update, an image no more than 10 keywords can be associated with it, you cannot even save it with more keywords. (RedBubble also said they would remove any existing extra keywords but so far that hasn't happened.)

So, while I agree that a 30-keyword limit is not good, it's better than it was (though worse than it was before that), and it's far better than RedBubble (especially since SmugMug picks up the keywords from your meta data).

What's a drag for me is not knowing which ones are going to get picked up. I can understand a stock agency having a much harder limit, but it seems Smug's should be at least as generous as most stock agencies, since I'd like to have a work-free upload of the same images I edit for stock, to SmugMug. If most of my stock agencies will accept 50 keywords, and I don't know which ones Smug is going to get rid of and they don't show me that I've gone over the limit, I'm often stuck w/ the most important keywords left off. It's amazing how fast you go through 50 when you have a horticultural shot or you have a huge family, or you have an item that people may look up by its entire name or just part of it. And yeah, RedBubble went a little insane, to their own detriment.

    More keywords needed
I need only 35 keywords, it seems wrong that I can only add 30, this means I have to upload the image a second time and tag it. Lots of work for just 5 keywords. I am tagging people in the video and it is heats of swimming. There are three keywords I use to describe each video to limit search and return results and i need to tag 4 people per a relay X 8 lanes. Seems simple until the keyword won't show up. Also to make my search work right they must be separate first and last names.
