Dated Watermarks

I read that the correct way to protect your digital images via watermark is to include the date (i.e., year).

Example: Copyright 2010 Your Name

How important is including the year?

proper placement of a copyright indicia requires the year be included regardless of it's for a watermark or elsewhere.
