A couple of the 1000+ shots taken this week-end during a dressage show.

Sometimes you have to "make do" with the poses you get when trying to work with a young stallion in a busy public horse park - especially when there are mares in the vicinity, if you get my drift.

Ideally he'd be standing square, we'd have wiped the green slime off his mouth where he grabbed grass, and pulled his handler's jacket down. He is an impressive lad, though, isn't he?

I know nothing about judging horses. And I don't seem to be destained to find out! As a 3 - 4 year old my folks were taking me to a pony farm outside Twin Falls, Idaho and they would sit me on a very small mare with a colt and let her wonder around a very large corral with them stopping every few steps for the colt to have a drink. Before I got old enough to learn to really ride we moved back to Southern Illinois. When I was in 5th grade a fellow that worked next door to my dad had two daughters that were into showing a horse and he asked Dad if they would want to bring me down to the state fair grounds (DuQouin, IL) stable they boarded at. About the time the trainer, who had been showing me things and leading me around in the barn, said I had a good "seat" and was about to take me to an outside ring the owners family moved because he took a different job out of state. Then in the late '80s at a church camp when we were there for a work weekend one of the guys that had volunteered with their horse program for years had one session with me and I haven't gotten a chance since!

But . . . there is something about the handlers expression. . . is it joy or what but she seemed enchanted by something wonderful.

Vromme. Yes, he is young. Just five years old and beginning both his show (dressage) and breeding careers. Wonderful temperament. I had a blast doing his photo shoot.

Thanks Gary. Sorting through 1000+ photos is time consuming - but I can whip through them fairly quickly using Aperture3 and its rating system. That's my goal for today. Get the initial sorting done and some proofs up for clients.

Thanks. I had fun doing the outside shots, but the competition shots are in an indoor arena with mixed and dreadful lighting - and no flash allowed. Not a lot of fun trying to open up the new 1DMKIV to 1600 or 3200 ISO and still avoid excessive noise. Sigh. I do what I can.ne_nau.gif

Thanks Tanya. I still wore my snow pants and winter jacket with the hunting gloves. We did the shoot at 8:a.m. just after sunrise and it was still nasty cold. It warmed up by about 3:p.m. Sunday - and then I was over dressed but too tired to care.

All told I shot over 1000 images over the week-end. Check them out on my smugmug site at http://www.imagesbyceci.smugmug.com

Look under "horses / dressage" for the individual and group albums.

Thanks for dropping by Saturday. Warmth would have been nicerolleyes1.gif
