Since some of you enjoyed the last shots from the BBoys here in chi *and* the Dgrin site is telling me I haven't posted in a while and should share some photos (big brother???), I felt the need to post a few...

For those that recall, I shoot a lot of stuff but have spent the last year or so shooting the hip-hop scene in Chicago a lot. The BBoys/ BGirls are tremendously athletic, so "sports" seems like the right forum for the pix.

But first: 30 seconds on my soap box...
Hip Hop has 4 pillars:
  1. Emcees (rappers)
  2. DJ's (or turntablists)
  3. BBoys/ BGirls (dancers)
  4. Grafitti
I most shoot #1 and #3. The Chicago BBoy scene is great and it's always nice to get the timing "perfect" to catch the right shot. Great music and great theatrics. In any case, if you like these, you can follow what's going on a few places:
  1. My site (kbevphoto.com) on Smugmug
  2. The Hip-hop culture community on Smugmug
  3. the kbevphoto page on facebook (just search) (it'll be more than just hip hop though)
OK, and lastly my favorite BBoy shots are in a portfolio gallery at:

In any case, I shot last weekend and got some good stuff. The big "Hellaween" battle is the 23rd... If you're in the CHI and want to go shoot, I'm bringing some other local folks who want to see what it's all about. Email me...:D

I can't wait! Enjoy a few from last weekend's "Remember the Name Battle":

BBoy Voodoo of the Chicago Tribe. In addition to a sick freeze, notice he's standing on his hand.

BBoy P-nut is 9-years old and was a judge for the "Shorty" Battle. He often competes against grown men. This photo captures his command on the cypher.

I can't sit in a lotus position any more. However, at no point in my life did I ever sit in one, then flip over into a double wrist-stand.

When your opponent tries to out-trick you, you MUST show some disapproval as if "anyone" could do that....

I almost never use my flash. I don't like what it does to the atmosphere of the shots. I am usually "wide open" at 2.8 (17-55 on a d300) or 1.8ish (50mm on a d700). I'm usually set around ISO 2500/3200. The noise in this environment usually add a little flavor to the picture anyway. :D

The lighting in some of the bboy battle is OK. At this venue, they have several stage lights in the ceiling, but you have to time the move and the "lighting" right, b/c they slip in/ out constantly. I shoot set on manual b/c the meter just goes nuts at these things... Also just started shooting raw, so I can "correct" a bit at home...

The d300 is noticeably noisier, but until I buy a 2nd D700, i'll be ok. "The Capital Committee" (my wife), has those plans on hold though...

Thanks! The shots on the Blog are great. It's hard to get the timing right and takes a lot of practice. I'm a big fan of hip hop, so these things are great. I'd like to check out the scene in other areas. Hopefully some day soon...
