Nikon 28-70 on a D90?

I've been thinking about upgrading lenses for a while. I currently have a Nikon 18-200 and a 50 1.8 on a gripped D90. I basically like the 18-200 but it isn't great in low light. I like the broad range.

The 50 is much better in low light but seems a little long indoors sometimes.

I shoot a little bit of everything. I'd like to shoot more sports but just don't have the reach for most field sports and a 70-200 and TC are in the future. I shot a friends wedding when the paid photographer failed to show. The only thing I haven't spent much time shooting is portraits. I also don't see me going full frame anytime in the foreseeable future.

So anyway, I'm thinking about selling my 18-200 and buying a used Nikon 28-70 2.8. Thoughts?

You will miss the 200mm and the 18mm. The 28-70 is ok on the the DX body but the 17-55 is a more natural lens on there. But the 28-70 is not bad either. I just like the wider end more often than not. At 17mm it is just about what you see with your eyes. It just depends on if tend to shoot on the wide end of your 18-200 or more in the middle. You are right about the 50. It is a little long inside. It is great in a museum though!

This is my favorite lens for portraits on a DX body. You will be impressed with the color rendition and contrast of this lens. The focal length is just perfect for portaits as well as event photography. Used lenses going now for under $1000 in great condition as many have switched over to the newer 24-70mm version (I didn't like the new one and switched back!)

I find this lens a bit short for individual portraits on an FX body (I've gone to 85mm), but still use it often for events.

    Go for it!thumb.gif

I think you are right here. I plan on covering the long end in the future so its not gone forever. I've also thought of picking up a Tokina 11-16 for the wide end. Kind of stinks to go from 1 lens to 3 to cover the same range but I think the improvement in image quality and low light capability may make up for it.

I use it VERY VERY often on my D90. It is a great lens, but if you want to shoot wide, you don't want this lens. For portraits and work in dark conditions, this lens is the one you want.

I do plan on getting the 14-24 f2.8 eventually to compliment this lens for the wide angle.
