I have a Canon and I bought an extra lense. A hood came with it. When would I want to use the hood? Lighting, sporting event, etc?
I use one almost all the time. Except when I am trying to save a little space with my 80-200. They protect the lens, and they keep unwanted flare and reflections out of your shot too.

So it's "ok" to use it when shooting motocross? I was worried it would limit the lense and possibly mess with the lighting.
If you use the proper hood for your lens, it won't limit the lens at all. If the hood you have came with the lens, then it's the proper hood for tha lens (unless it was an aftermarket hood thrown in by the seller).
Since motocross is an outdoor sport, you're much more likely to get lens flare when shooting it than when you shoot an indoor event, and you need the hood more than ever. But even when shooting indoors, the hood can limit lens flare from artificial lights, and acts as a bumper, giving your lens some protection against bumps and scratches.
So use the hood all the time.
What I said when I saw the Grand Canyon for the first time: "The wide ain't wide enough and the zoom don't zoom enough!"

Shoot a few sample pictures of the exact same thing with and without the hood. After looking at them, you'll realize why. You'll get better contrast, color clarity. You name it, it will be better.

it's not the size of the lens that matters... It's how you focus it.
