Using filenames for keywords

Hi,
I have noticed that images of mine on smugmug don't show up in google image search very often, while they used to when I was on pbase. It's not a big deal but I was looking at the page source the other day, and I noticed that all the page text is created dynamically, ie is not included in the actual code of the page. But the filename was actually there. So I thought, if I include some core keywords in the filename, then they will actually be part of the stable code for the page, so in time google might start to link the pictures to the text, since each image has its own stable url.

Does this logic work? One flaw it might have is that, since the image is not actually cited in the page source, it won't make the necessary link in Google's image search. But it would at least work for a text search, right?

The other flaw is that smugmug seems to have a limit on how long filenames can be. Does anybody know what that is? I'm just getting generic 'wrong format' messages when I upload from Jeffrey Friedl's lightroom 3 plugin.

By the way, on the subject of Friedl's plugin--I tried using the official smugmug one, and it has so much less functionality. It seems to me like you should just buy Friedl's one, it's far superior. The ability to send metadata only, for example, and to link images and populate collections automatically, are invaluable.

Anyway, keep up the good work, love the site.

Seth

Google sees a different version of the site than you see with your eyes, or by viewing source. Including your filenames (which can be crazy long, I don't know the exact limit, will try and find out). Stay tuned for more improvements to our LR Publish feature!

    Thanks
    Thanks Andy,
So in the version that google sees, what text does it link with each image? Filename, caption, or both?
    Cheers,

    Seth

Either or both. If you have IMG_1234.jpg, googlebot sees that. If you have "Joe & Mary's Wedding Vows" googlebot sees that in the caption.
