Renaming and sorting in smugmug

I usually custom rename my files on export to Smugmug with sequence numbering starting with 1. I read somewhere that one should use 001 for the numbering, but Lightroom3 will only allow the sequence to start with 1. Arranging by number does not put files in order. Arranging by date taken doesn't either, and I have to go through and arrange them manually which is time consuming when there are 400+ files. They are sort of in order but in every 10 photos there are 4-5 out of sequence.

I have AutoSort set to none in the gallery options and SortDirection set to ascending.

It seems nuts to have to go outside Lightroom to rename them in order starting with 001, but that seems the only answer. I have to be overlooking something obvious.

I need to upload about 800 photos and need help with renaming so I don't have to spend all that time manually sorting. I tried searching for answers and noticed many others have this problem also but I never found any clearcut answers. Thanks.

Have you tried starting with 1001?

No, I knew it had to be obvious. Thanks, I'll give it a try.

So, if I rename with a custom name followed by 1001 et seq, all files will be in order when arranging by filename?

If the custom name you are referring to is the same for every photo, then you will be able to sort by file name.

You might want to try it with a small set first just to make sure the results are what you want.

I don't know where you're looking in Lightroom for renaming functionality, but everywhere I've looked, it has options for:

    Sequence # (1)
    Sequence # (01)
    Sequence # (001)
    Sequence # (0001)
    Sequence # (00001)

Pick one of the last two options and it will successfully work for up to 9999 images because it will pad the number with leading zeroes which will sort correctly in Smugmug.

Ok, I just noticed the edit option at the bottom of the rename screen which gives you the options above. In the default screen that was coming up, I was trying to enter the custom name and the start number which had the default # of 1. When I tried to change it to 001, it changed back to 1.
I tried Denise's suggestion also of entering the sequence to start at 1001 which worked. Thanks for the help.
