I have creds to shoot the Hurricanes home opener next week. I've never shot hockey before altho I've shot FB, VB, Lax, soccer, etc. Given the challenges of the white ice, is there any advice that any of you with experience can give so that I don't make ALL of the rookie mistakes?

I believe that I will have access to the glass and the lens holes.

I shoot with a D300 and have lenses of 70-200 f2.8, 50 f1.8, 90 f2.8 and 18-135 f3.5-5.6. I may have my second body back by then and could set up 2 lenses.

Do you typically use flash to shoot? My only flash is an SB600.

Any thoughts?

No Flash, it will reflect off glass. The team photographer and maybe some others will have access to flash via Pocket Wizards but these are either mounted in the boards or over head. Use exposure compensation of about 1 stop (experiment a little during warmups) to compensate for the white ice. Other then that have fun. Oh and if you have your lens through the hole in the glass make sure to pull it out when the players get close or you might end up with a broken camera.

Aktse shoots a lot of hockey and has some pointers here http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=675987&postcount=3

Also shooting during warmups will get you a chance to capture the players sans helmet

The Capitals aren't going to be an easy opponent.
