with a camera... does not apply to the rifle shots at the Pentagon today.

Link to NY times ruling regarding taking photos of courthouses and other fed buildings from public places -- it is allowed.

    I know that (in NYC) shooting pictures of 26 Federal Plaza will most certainly get you some attention.

    We have seen the photographers' rights topic come up frequently on Dgrin. If you haven't already seen it, Bert Krages' little summary is a good place to start. Basically, you can legally shoot anything at all if you are on public property. However, some police officers and many private security guards disregard the applicable laws and can ruin your whole day even though you are within your rights. So a little common sense is necessary. Ask yourself whether the shot is worth going to court over. Even though you are likely to prevail, you will incur legal expenses that may not be reimbursed, plus a whole lot of hassle.
