Shutter Speed

I need help. I have a Nikon D80, SB900, and SD9 battery pack. I shoot football in shutter priority, but for some reason, whenever I use my flash, my camera won't let me put the shutter speed over 200. Very unuseful! Does anyone have any ideas what's going on? Maybe a setting on the SB900? Thanks!

That's the sych speed of your camera and flash combination ....
That being said, your flash probably has a setting for "high speed sync" which will then fire the flash at any shutter speed - but you'll see that your flash won't cover the distance that you're used to .... there's some trade-off there.

you will have to go inside your camera settings and set it to high speed sync to go over 200. should be in the manual!! good luck! as cecil said, as you go over the high speed sync speed for you camera, you will lose the effectiveness of the flash.

Of course, there's an alternative and that is to allow the flash to freeze the action instead of the shutter speed. If you shoot with manual exposure and keep the camera's exposure more than two stops below ambient, there will only be enough light for a proper exposure when the flash is going off (flash burst lasts between 1/1000 and 1/4000). You end up with some blur in the hands/feet if they're moving fast but you don't lose the power you do in high speed sync.
