CyberCommander/Canon 580 EXII

I'm about to pull the trigger on a cyber commander and receiver for my 580 exII. But I'm new to the strobist/flash/studio lighting thing, so I have some questions.
As far as I've been told, I'd need a specific Hot Shoe transmitter to use ETTL, but I heard w/ the Cybersyncs that if you work in manual that it should be able to adjust your lighting via the cyber commander.
My question is, is that true? how does the receiver adjust the intensity of the flash, if its just plugged in via PC cord? I was told that when something is plugged in via cable, its just a trigger...does the cybercommander just delay the fire of the flash to affect intensity?
I'm just making sure that I can truly work in the fully customizable zone that the cybercommander literature says I can...that I can control my 580 ex II fully from the unit.
Any input? Anyone that is using the Cyber Commander with a canon strobe?
