Can any one give a positive ID on this bird: [ http://tinyurl.com/2c7npu2 ] it is an avatar of a friend of mine and the Nature Conservancy blurb, but the blurb did not identify the bird on said it was not tropical and lived in the eastern US.....she figures some where like Pa. I have Googled until I was dead tired of typing and clicking....hoping someone here might recognize it.

Thanks in Advance for the help.

Edit: the above url was changed to one that will hopefully work

I don't think the bird is a native to the Pennsylvania area. It also does not appear to be a wild bird. The metal service bands legal for banding wild birds in the US are aluminum. The green band on the bird's leg is not such a band.

That bird is not native to the United States. I found this on an internet site.......

"The Gouldian Finch, Chloebia gouldiae, is arguably the most vividly colorful bird on earth. Its native habitat is the northern region of Australia. The Gouldian Finch is an endangered species. A 2000 "Recovery Outline" (.PDF Format) produced by the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage estimated Australia's wild Gouldian Finch population to be approximately 2500 mature birds.

Australia has a closed door policy prohibiting the exportation of animals from the country. Exportation of Australian finches was banned in 1960."

I assume that your subject is a pet bird that escaped from its cage.

Thanks everyone...I will let my friend Katherine know what the verdict is and she can
go back to the "nature conservancy" site where the blurb was and correct them if possible.......

Again Thanks everyone I truly appreciate it.
