To be honest I dont know if it would be a good thing or bad, to "go public". I don't have a business savvy bone in my body. I do know that the founders have prided themselves on being "100% bootstrapped", "family owned and run" etc. for as long as I've known them. So the opposite of those things would be a bad thing right? Or at least a less awesome thing. I can only tell you that I'm here, mostly for the sense of community, the family feel, and the direct link we have between customer and owner. The service, quite frankly, I could get elsewhere.
The community is Dgrin, mods and members. A place where the only thing you need is a civil tone, and you can talk about and say just about anything. Get vast amounts of help on your photography, vent your frustration when SmugMug isn't working properly, or just hang out and make friends. I mean actual friends, not Facebook friends. Here's one example of many where this virtual community outshines "real" ones: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=60680
As for family feel there isn't much I could say that this picture doesn't say better: http://cmac.smugmug.com/Family/Oct-Dec-2010/14463849_n8DGA#1075166211_6HDyx-A-LB Now that's my kind of founder/CEO/Chief geek. Sergey Brin can take his segway off the nearest cliff and Eric Schmidt, heck I don't even want to know that creepy guy.
The direct link is Andy, and the founders' attitude towards openness. Andy is the only gobetween I have to go through to get a message to the bigwigs, or get any message out to the whole company. If I can sell Andy an idea, he'll change the whole company for me.
None of this is hard linked to the photo sharing service that SmugMug provides. The shareholders would not own this because none of it can be bought. All of it, in my opinion, would be hurt by change of ownership.

Well allright then. Someone said it was Nasdaq's way of welcoming Smugmug as a serviceprovider/partner of their's, is that wat it was?

One of the founders will have a custom solid gold thumb, the other will be getting a Venusian high mountain mink rug.
Andy will own every camera and lens made in the world.
There will be jets and yachts. Parties, and celebrations.
The support heroes will find the tax burden of continuing to work too onerous.
Next a new support group will be hired and located in a foreign land.
They will begin raising prices and developing new charges to satisfy the stock holders.
The stock holders will be the customer, we will become the exploited.
I rather like it the way it is.
I vote to keep it that way.

Me too Sam, me too.
