I finally got it! My first good lens:ivar.

I went to Adorama today during lunch and on my walk back to the subway I couldn't resist some test shots.

I will have to get used to the tighter crop--meaning I've gotten used to shooting with my pancake 25mm and this is so much tighter. I noticed I was cutting heads and feet off.

You're going to love that lens. It may as well be glued to one of my 2 cameras I use it so much (mainly portraits). I've seen your work before and always enjoy it. Happy hunting. :photo

That is the sharpest, most *useable* lens in the lineup.

In shot one, the focus was on the flower.. note how sharp it is!

    Here's a link to 4/3'rds forum- it's a *user* review, which I like more:

I'm sorry I traded mine in.. but I got the E-30 in return, so it helped the pain!

    Give that lens to an Italian with an E-3;

I am liking it alread for portrait shots I've been practicing with my kids.
HOWEVER--I don't know about using it for street/pj which I love. But, I want to start shooting as a second for weddings and senior portraits e-sessions etc. so I think it will definately come in handy, once I learn how to use it properly.

    Thanks for the comment.

It's taking some getting used to as most of the places inside my home feel too cramped to shoot this if I want any kind of enviornment showing.

I wanted something fast too, and it's great in daylight, but I am struggling with low light (I knew that going in though).

I have to just keep practicing with it--thanks for the link.

Working with prime lens (non-zoom) takes some getting used to.. but once you do- WOW!

The pancake 25mm is good for street, not as fast as the 50mm- but gets the job done.

For portraits- it is awesome and ultra-sharp.. no equal, really.

    Stupid question time.....

What's a pancake lens? Is that where the lens glass is really bulbous and sticking out the front?

...oh, and nice color rendition straight out of the camera... That yellow flower is pretty amazing.

Nothing quite like playing with some new glass, eh Liz? :-) For what it's worth, I love my 60mm f/2.8 Macro (I'm a Canon shooter). I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with your new lens! Got plans to do any macro work, or going to use it as a portrait type thing? Just curious.

I like #2 best. I love the look on the child's face, especially the eyes.

M38A1: I'm pretty sure that a 'pancake lens' is just a very short lens. I think this is the one that Liz was referring to.

It's exactly what Nyarthlopic said in the next post to yours.
It's a flat little lens--I love it. It's perfect for street shooting. It would be spectacular if its low light capabilities were better.

Yes I'm loving the sharpness--I took it to a halloween party in a hall last night, so a spacious place, but I soon found myself switching to my pancake as it was crowded and I couldn't get far enough from my subjects to get them in the frame--also if I wanted any enviornment I'd have to scoot back more and it was just too crowded--also although when I nailed a shot it was really nice, much better than my pancake in low light, the AF took forever to hunt and focus. i could have switched to manual but my little viewfinder is too damn small and I couldn't focus properly (and I'm kind of blind). I hate composing on my LCD but it looks like I will have to get the hang of it if I want to get the best out of this lens.

I don't think I'm trading in my pancake anytime soon.
Although I have been lusing over a GF1 17mm f1.7 and well, if I get that then I will surely trade in the pancake and use the GF1 for street and night shots. It would have been perfection for the halloween party I went to last night.

I have both the Olympus 25mm pancake and the 50mm lens. I wish I could say I loved them both, but I've been extremely disappointed. The AF is so slow on the 50mm, forget trying to get anything quickly. By the time it focuses on any interesting shot, the moment has passed. I rarely use either of these lens anymore mainly because of poor focusing and/or poor performance in low light.

I wish you luck with them though. The shots you posted are nice.

I was very on the fence the first day--but after shooting with it all day today I'm very happy with it.
I had my 25mm pancake with me today and only used it a couple of times--mainly when I was in a booth at a diner and needed to shoot the kids across the table from me, too tight for the 50--but after that I shot with the 50mm the rest of the day and I'm drooling.

I do see how it hunts in low light sometimes and I just turn the camera off when it starts to wonder and turn it on again and aim and fire quickly--so far that approach has helped. It's also forcing me to manually focus--I struggle with my vision sometimes and the tiny viewfinder, but for the most part I am so happy!

    Thanks Sherry.
