NEF vs DNG

I've recently started to use the LR import function (instead of creating folders manually, *then* importing into LR) and in addition have started using the "Save as DNG" function as well ($1 to Kelby). While this move was initially organizationally inspired, the smaller DNG file format helps in the storage department, too. So, to my question: Am I gaining time here? If I have, say, 3000 images it takes "x" time to import and save as DNG...it would seem logical that I'm *gaining* time in what would amount to faster saving times going from DNG to Jpeg vs. NEF to Jpeg, no?

Of course, the DNG format does remove some data from the files. For instance, the focus points information is gone. Or, at least, programs like Aperture can display this information using the vendors RAW format but not with DNG. That's just one of the reasons I won't use DNG.
