A visiting Groove-billed Ani showed up here in Gainesville at Payne's Prairie-La Chua Trail a little over a week ago. My wife and I spent 3 days and a good number of hours trying to get a glimpse of it.

On the third day we arrived at La Chua right as the park opened, and went straight to the spot where people have been seeing it. We spotted it right away in the distance. After awhile it worked its way to within about 8 feet of where we where and I got some nice shots.

The groove-billed Ani is in the Cuckoo family.

    Lovely captures!
This is a bird I've never even heard of before, much less seen. I take it visits to your part of the world are rare. Where is its usual territory?

Beautiful captures. I did not think that they ever got that far north.

The Groove-billed Ani is a tropical bird that reaches the southern tip of Texas. In Florida we have the Smooth-billed Ani in the south, but they rarely reach Gainesville either.

Well done Glenn! Always nice getting a shy bird in the viewfinder.

Looks a bit like one of the coucal family, but has a really vicious looking bill.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
