I ain't no wizard when comes to this stuff, but in the FF preferences area there is a section where you can specify what applications to use for various tasks.
If for some reason your telling FF to use an application that is not there or is corrupt that could cause the issue.

any thing dealing with audio / video gets an always ask or use windows media player mark.......
I went an uninstalled FF and also Adobe flash player and reinstalled and ...it is all still silent from the web......
I am on a Mac and for audio files mine shows "use quick time plug in"
If it says always ask I would think it ain't pointing to any application, hence no sound. Can you put in an audio player / app in the action column?

after i updated my nvidia-driver
the new nvidia-driver also has an audio-driver in it [ weird but true ]
best you can do is re-install your previous [or original] audio-driver
