... wait for jokes to pass...

I'm heading into the Grand Canyon for a 25 day private trip! FINALLY!

Anyway, I have the Manfrotto 3265 and it's just not enough. I'll be putting it on a Bogen 3021. Weight is an issue but not a deal breaker. I expect to just lash it to my boat for quick deploy so I expect to get it wet repeatedly and to treat it like it is indestructible. (NEVER buy any used gear from me.) :)

Accordingly, durability is the main consideration. Compactness is a real bonus. And it needs to be south of $250. I have a number of Manfrotto plates so it would be a bonus to stay with them.

What say you?

Manfrotto 488 or 498? They're cheap and pretty compact, and so far seem pretty durable.

I've got a 488 head on 3021 legs. I just wish it had the preload adjuster the 498 added!

Why would you insure something that belongs to someone else if you wouldn't insure your own gear?

Because if you're renting something and damage it.. you buy it. If you have insurance, it doesn't matter! (at least thats the general concept behind insurance)

Well, I try not to buy stuff I don't need. So if I own it and break it, I have to buy another too. What's the difference? Let me amplify your "general concept of insurance." Only insure what you can't afford to lose. If you buy more insurance than that, you're wasting money.
