High speed with sound

Can anyone recommend a camera that can record in 60 fps or greater and record sound at the same time? I have done an extensive search and it seems all the cameras under $1000 do not record sound in high speed mode (like the Casios or Samsungs).

While there are a number of camcorders and dSLRs that can record 60i, that is not the same as 60 discrete still frames per second.

True high-speed motion recording devices often do not record sound because it requires the concept of a "time base" which is often not required for the images alone. Only video recording requires a time base.

The usual solution to sound recording along with high speed motion analysis is to record the sound using a separate device that is synchronized to the high speed capture device. Sound recording does not necessarily record in discrete "quanta" as does image capture. Sound is usually recorded as a "stream" of continuous information/data. (Although for digital video+sound the continuous sound is generally split into packets to match the video frames and allow for easier editing. Earlier tape based analog video recordings, including some high-speed motion recording devices based on analog video recording, used a separate audio track on the tape. This included VHS/S-VHS/Video 8/Hi-8 systems and high speed systems based on these mechanisms.)

Any number of sound recorders are available which can record the sound and then you would apply sound resampling software to adjust the timebase into the suitable timebase to sync with the playback of the visuals.

What is it you are trying to accomplish?

720 60p is 60 discreet frames per second and many cameras including the 550d do record that format. The 5D Mk II doesn't though.

Thanks for the correction. 60p is indeed progressive video and all fields are represented.
