I have an old SLIK U212. While I would like to invest in a new tripod and ball head, I am wondering can I replace the head on the tripod. The head just not strong enough for my Canon 7D & 70 to 200 zoom lens. The legs are sturdy. It is just the head that seems to be the issue.

The Slik 212 has been around quite literally for decades. Your best bet is to contact THK directly to see if the head is removable. If the head is removable you will need to know if it is a 3/8" or 1/4" attachment in order to chose a appropriate head. Let us know what you find out and we can make suggestions afterwards.

Thanks! Here is the good news from THK.

Lock down the pan handle, tilt lock and lock collar on the tripod, then unscrew the head counter clockwise. This will expose the 1/4-20" thread post on top of the elevator column. You can then mount a new ball head or pan head.

Now you just need to purchase either a ballhead with a 1/4" attachment or you can use a ballhead with a 3/8" attachment with a collar insert to convert it to 1/4".

Do you have a budget constraint?

Which version of the Canon 70-200mm do you have?
