Battery Grips and L-Brackets?

I've been thinking of making two purchases; an l-bracket/ballhead and a battery grip.

I am looking for some general guidance here, and would like to know...

For those of you that have both a grip and l-bracket, do you leave them both attached to the camera at all times? If so, do you feel the l-bracket gets in the way when using the grip (holding in portrait mode). Do you feel the camera becomes too heavy with both installed?

I am just trying to figure out whether to get the regular (non-grip) l-bracket and remove it when I use the grip, or the long l-bracket which would mean leaving the grip on the camera all of the time.

Any thoughts or considerations? Thanks.

I find a monopod very useful and have used one for a number of years, but recently I saw a pro (local news-hound) using a monopod, but having a pistol grip between the monopod and the camera, a which I thought was a neat idea especially if there was a quick-release between the grip and the monopod.

I use a grip on each of my camera bodies. I like the added battery capability and the fact that the controls on the grip allow easier shooting in portrait mode. I have L-plates on each camera, too. I am used to that, and rarely find them to be in the way when the camera is not on a tripod.

I have a 5DII with a RRS L bracket (for their pano head which uses an Arca Swiss style plate) and have no problems accessing the ports on the side of the camera or battery compartment.
