so this came from a filter on a normal lens? I've seen those "+2 +4 +8" macro filters on ebay, but i wasn't sure what kind of effect they had really, or if they did much at all.

It's a +10 filter. It actually wasn't attached to my lens at all. I just held it in front of the lens. I have more mobility that way. I think it works quite well considering it's just a filter!
