Just getting into using flash more and aquired an SB-10 Speedlight (80's?). I put it up on a tri-pod and used a remote hot shoe. It fires and seems to work well. I know this may not be the best, but for my budget, free is good. My question is this a sufficient off camera flash. Like if I used it with a shoot through umbrella, reflectors and all that? I will continue to experiment with it, I just don't want to waste my time...as in if I spend $40 I could improve my color/lighting output by 50%.

The Nikon SB-10 is rated at a guide number of 82ft/25meters. That's a little low powered for some larger modifiers. It should be useful for many smaller modifiers and smaller/closer subject matter.

I suggest that for a 1-2 head shot, or head and shoulders, you're probably OK with a 45" shoot-through umbrella. Likewise a Demb Flip-It or bounce card should be fine for normal house ceilings and a scoop modifier is efficient for those times when other bounce devices won't work.
