What determines the viewing size of a photo?

When I view my photos in lightbox view and use the right arrow to scroll through the photos, the viewing size occasionally changes even though all the photos are very similar in size. It is a bit disruptive to the viewing experience that the size of the photos changes.
If the viewer does not choose a viewing size, how does "auto" determine the size, and why would it change?

Most photos show at XL size but then occasionally one will be X2 and will actually have part of the photo out of the viewable area of my screen.
Firefox with Menu, Navigation, and Bookmarks toolbars.
1680 X 1050
22" monitor

http://photos.humansafterall.com/Nightlife-and-Music/Moogfest-2010-Saturday/14621396_uztxC#1087699649_A8M8G-A-LB is 1024x650 in XL size so our algorithm says we can go to the next size up, which X2.
I'm not sure if your wibya toolbar is affecting our calculations or not.
