I got mine via bing cashback / buy.com for about 11-12w00 when canon also had a heavy pre 60d rebate on, so some of the deals you can get are legit, you just have to be careful! glad it worked out for you, its an awesome camera , i havent regretted mine for a second. Its IQ might not be 10/10 but its pretty darn good and the rest of it is top quality. Now youll be after lenses to keep up with it lol

Fortunately I have a few lenses in the bag already. Saving up for a battery grip now. :)

Opteka do some cheap ones, not used them myself but they have been around a while so probably not terrible, gave up on grips a while back :) Enjoy the camera, its a beast!

I love the grip only because my hands are gigantic. I am an XL rugby build of a guy. Everything looks small in my mitts. :)

I swear it could track a rat shot out a canon in a coal mine.

Dgrin quote of the month!! rolleyes1.gif

There are a few threads on handholding in the technique forum. Basically, keep your shutter speeds up, tuck your elbows in and cross your fingers (figuratively that is, not literally :giggle). There's a technique for using a piece of string, too - dig around in the Tech forum and see if you can find it. Also -a nd this really does work in diffficult situations (note to self - why didn't I do this on Saturday?! :bash) - switch to motor drive and fire off a few - even if the first doesn't nail focus, the subsequent shots often will..........

    Enjoy the new beast!

How about a 40D? It's a good performer and that saves you money for glass. Or a 1DII. Or a 5D1, or a 50D. You'll need some good glass to get the most out of any body.

Oh... did I mention... have any of you been following the CLP thread in Flea Market...
Canon removed the 5DII from the CLP. Now the 7D is the highest body available.

The 40d is nice, one of canons best for a few years, I know the screen isnt one of the all singing all dancing high res ones, but does it have focus micro adjust?
No. For some reason though, I'm still able to get sharp shots with it.

The refurb 5D2 from Canon is a dollar less than 2K. The 40D doesn't have AF microadjustment, but that just saves you the trouble of sending it in to Canon, and it saves money if your lens isn't under warranty.

You don't shoot sigma glass then ;) Focus adjust isn't some panacea but when you look at the before and after shots its quite impressive. It definately does save plenty of trips to canon and time without glass which is a good thing! The lack of it probably isn't a huge reason not to buy a camera, but once you are used to having it you do look for it on other cameras you consider buying.

Agree. It's a valuable tool for the serious shooter. One of my main reasons for wanting to upgrade from the 40D when it's more tempting than right now.

Sigma, no. But I did spend half a day calibrating about six Canon lenses on my 5DMKII, and all of them were spot-on from the factory. I'm not saying it never happens, but I'm positive that the vast majority of Canon lenses are calibrated just fine from the factory. For bodies, I dunno. Maybe I got lucky on both my 40D and 5DMKII bodies. I do know I had 20D that was a bit of a clinker.

... (unsurprising as you can actually unscrew the front element entirely, and they wonder why their fault rate is insane) ...

In the original Canon EF 300mm, f2.8L USM, the front element is actually a thin protective filter in front of the actual front element, which is fluorite and relatively easily scratched. It is designed to be user replaceable if necessary.

I am not so sure about the IS version or the IS II version.

Not sure how well this shows it off, but it was fun for a try. I think that might be tycho but I am sure other peeps will know better.
7d @ 200 iso, 1/200 @ f11, 300 2.8 + 2x tc + 1.4x tc, MF. 100% crop. some usm and contrast applied, let lr3 remove the CA which was mild considering the shot. There is some noise from adding about 2/3rd of a stop EC and the contrast & usm. I was just playing about but it did better than I thought it would, those tc's on that pixel density even with that lens I was expecting mush.

Interesting to compare this to kdog's moon (also @ 100%) of a couple days ago, shot with the 40D. To my eyes, the IQ of that image is way ahead of what you got here (of course part of the reason is the greater magnification of the gear he used, but still...).

Thanks, Neil. Actually, that shot above has MORE magnification than what I used. Mine was 700mm, and this shot above is 840mm (300x2x1.4). Plus, the higher pixel density of the 7D gave him extra magnification over my 40D. That's a great shot as well, no question, assuming the entire moon looks as good as that one crop.

    Cheers,
    -joel

Dunno about shipping it across the pond, Richy, but you're welcome to use it here. mwink.gif I did see the noise, and was wondering if you'd pushed it a bit, so that explains that. I'm using a Gitzo 3530 LSV, and a full Wimberley head. It works wonderfully for moon shots because I can effortlessly pan straight up if I need to, which is tricky with my ball head. Incidentally, before I got the 500, I did lots of moon shots with a 400mm F5.6, and TWO TC1.4X, one Canon, and one Kenko Pro. That too yielded really good results.

I just added another one to my moon thread. This latest one has TWO TC1.4 extenders on it for a total focal length of 980mm. mwink.gif

Scam, definitely, stay away. The easy way to tell is at the bottom it has those icons: Google checkout, Bizrate customer certified, etc. On a trustworthy site, you can click on these. But on zwee they're just icons, fake. Stay away.
